Gay Orlando: Orlando Bidding for the 2018 Gay Games

This is some of the most exciting news for Gay Orlando for years, the LGBT community in the city and those thinking about relocating to Orlando are overjoyed to hear that Orlando is bidding to be the host for the 2018 Gay Games!

The Gay Games is the premier sporting event for the LGBT community, held every four years, it started out being called the Gay Olympics, before a controversial lawsuit back in the early 1980’s forced a name change. Today the event is as popular as ever drawing thousands of visitors to host cities every time it is held.

Converge Orlando Inc, a new visitors bureau that is pushing Orlando’s delights on gay tourists is spearheading the effort for the cities bid to play host to the 2018 Gay Games. The bid is a partnership between several local organizations, including the Central Florida Sports Commission and Visit Orlando and 15 cities around the world are in the running to host the event. Even Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is on board for the host bid and said he is “extremely supportive” of the bid.

As for event venues, Orlando has some great facilities that are being scoped by officials including such places as ESPN/Disney’s Wide World of Sports, the Amway Center and the Citrus Bowl. It would be a true honor for Orlando to host this event! Fingers will be crossed all over Orlando that we win the bid, until then we can all look forward to the 2014 Games in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Gay Games can bring up to 200,000 people to a city over a seven plus day period. The aim for Orlando is to hold the games in or around October when other popular events are going on in Orlando, such as the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival which is, as written before, popular with the LGBT population in Orlando and beyond!
