For those LGBT individuals who are already living in Orlando then you will likely already be aware of “The Center” – to give it the full title: “The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center of Central Florida” which has been nicely abbreviated to “The Center” and has been proudly serving the local LGBT community for over 32 years and is a great amenity.

The Center offers a variety of support and social programs such as counseling at a reduced cost, AA meetings, HIV testing and more! It stands up to both individual and institutional injustice and discrimination in Central Florida and is a source of information, education, advocacy and support for the local LGBT community, their family and friends. By now you may wonder how many people use the Center, well their latest figures are at more than 15,000 individuals a year through its doors and over 8,000 a month online. The Center relies on volunteers to keep its doors open as it only have one full time employee and one part time employee. That said it manages to stay open seven days a week thanks to its dedicated volunteers.

The Center is one of only 12 GLBT centers in the nation that also houses an art gallery. However it doesn’t stop there – it also has a 3000 book library and a Cyber Center offering free access to computers and the internet to the LGBT community.

The Center started life as a crisis hotline for gay men in 1978 and is the oldest, continuous GLBT organization in the State of Florida. Over the years it grew to incorporate the entire LGBT community and while formerly known as Gay Community Services, The Center was incorporated in 1981 and has been located at its present location on Mills Avenue in the Downtown area for over ten years.
